According to the Express and Star, Wolverhampton Wanderers are planning a £20m spending spree in the January transfer window, as the club steps up their bid for a Premier League return.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side currently top the Sky Bet Championship table, holding a four-point lead over Cardiff City, but more importantly sit 10 points clear of third, putting them in control in the race for automatic promotion.

Two players who have been key to putting Wolves in the driving seat have been Diogo Jota and Leo Bonatini, who are both at Molineux on-loan.

Wolves plan to make both Jota and Bonatini’s loan deals permanent in the New Year, after the attacking duo have made an impressive start to life in English football, scoring a combined total of 21 Championship goals and adding an impressive 11 assists.

Securing the permanent signature of Jota from Athletico Madrid and Bonatini from Al-Hilal is likely to cost Wolves between £10-15m, but Nuno’s January spending spree will not stop there.

Wolves are looking to add a striker and right wing-back to their squad to add competition for Bonatini and Matt Doherty respectively.

It is understood that Wolves are only considering permanent deals for players they believe can take the step-up into the Premier League with them.

Derby County striker, Chris Martin, is reportedly on Wolves’ shortlist in the striking department.

The Verdict

Key in Janaury will be securing the permanent future of Jota and Bonatini, which appears to be high on Wolves’ agenda.

That news will delight supporters, but the added bonus of further arrivals will excite Wolves’ everybody associated with the club.

Planning for the Premier League is a sensible move, with Nuno’s side looking unstoppable at this moment in time.
