There was a lot of change at Wolves over the summer, but one man who has been through it all over the years at Molineux is Matt Doherty.

The Irish defender is a regular under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo, despite a raft of new signings that have arrived.

Having spent previous seasons at left-back, he has reverted to a more natural role on the right side as a wing-back in Santo's 3-4-3 formation.

It seems to be benefiting Doherty too, giving him license to go forward, where he excels.

The formation is something the manager was drilling into the players since the first day of pre-season and the ex-Bohemians man has revealed the squad enjoy how the ex-Porto manager operates.

Everybody has a lot of respect for what he's bringing to the table and the things he's trying to get us to do,” he told the Express & Star.

And when he does try to get us to do stuff it works more often than now. When he's trying to implement his ideas we know there's a good chance it'll benefit the team.”

A stunning performance against Aston Villa on Saturday sent the Black Country side to the top of the table.

The Verdict

Inevitably, the big-name signings Wolves have made will take the headlines, but Santo has improved many of the old guard that he kept on, particularly Matt Doherty.

It appears the manager had the formation planned before he joined the club and worked tirelessly on it over pre-season, and the Irish defender has played superbly and was rewarded with a new contract recently.

Given what Santo has achieved and the club's he has worked for, the players would have to respect him and then to make an instant impact like he has, it means that everyone involved with Wolves has full confidence in the manager.
