According to the Mirror, Wolverhampton Wanderers' owners Fosun International have promised that they will carry on spending the cash next summer, whether they are promoted this season or not.

Wolves sit atop the Championship table having lit up the league with some dazzling football so far this season and if their goal of promotion is achieved this season then Nuno Espirito Santo has been reportedly been told that no transfer target will be seen as too ambitious - as they seek to eventually become Champions League contenders.

However, even if the club is still in the second tier next season, the Molineux faithful have been reassured that the spending will continue.

A Wolves insider is quoted as saying: “Fosun are totally committed to this project. Even if the club fails to win promotion this season, that will not deter them.

“They will continue to spend whatever it takes, not just to get to the Premier League, but to stay there and make a real impact.

“They are confident of achieving their goals but in the event that it all goes wrong, they know they can recover their transfer outlay by selling players, who are the right age and ability, to get a return on their investment.”

It remains to be seen how the plans comply with Financial Fair Play but considering that elite clubs such as Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain have flouted the rules in recent years without serious reprimand, Wolves may feel confident that they can do something similar.

The Verdict:

It is still early days in the season so far but it is hard to see a scenario where Wolves are not playing Premier League football next season.

Obviously, everyone is flush in the top flight but all bar the top six seem to have underlying issues - two of the biggest spenders outside of the elite side, Everton and West Ham have spent big but ended up changing manager already.

So, if Wolves are serious about flexing their muscles and have a clear sense of ambition, they can establish themselves as a real force in the Premier League - although the Champions League might be a step too far!
