Wolves have opened contract talks with Morgan Gibbs-White over a possible new contract.

According to Football Insider, the Premier League outfit are looking to secure the forward’s long-term future to the club.

The 22-year old spent the previous season on loan with Championship side Sheffield United, where he featured in 37 league games.

Gibbs-White impressed during his stint at Bramall Lane, scoring 12 goals and earning 10 assists as Paul Heckingbottom’s side finished 5th in the table.

However, the Blades’ chances of retaining his services beyond the summer were dashed following their play-off semi-final penalty shootout defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The Reds went on to win at Wembley to earn promotion to the top flight and have since turned their attention to trying to sign the Wolves player on a permanent basis.

Southampton have also been linked with a move for the player, who Wolves have slapped a £25 million price tag in the event that a new deal cannot be agreed during this transfer window.

Gibbs-White’s performances with United also earned him plenty of plaudits from the club, receiving the player of the season award.

It is now clear that wherever the forward competes next season, it will almost definitely come as part of a top flight team.

The Verdict

This is a smart move from Wolves, with Gibbs-White having proven he is ready to step up to the Premier League.

Tying the player down to a long-term deal is a fair reflection of his efforts to develop his game in the last couple of seasons.

While he has played well in the Championship, it is difficult to see either Forest or Southampton meeting the £25 million asking fee to sign him.

This makes signing a new contract at the Molineux the likeliest scenario, but Gibbs-White will rightly be demanding he receive ample playing time as part of any new deal with Wolves.
