Wolves wing-back Matt Doherty has revealed that he thought his side could win the league way back in August.

The Irish defender has been an integral part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans and popped up with two goals in the crucial win against Reading on Tuesday.

That victory, combined with Aston Villa’s defeat, means Wolves are now ten points ahead of third, with promotion looking a strong possibility.

However, they are only three points ahead of Cardiff City and face a trip to Wales in a few weeks that could have a serious say on where the title ends up.

And, Doherty was quoted by the Express & Star as saying he was always confident about their chances of finishing as champions.

I’ve been saying it from about the third game of the season to be honest. I think we played Derby or Hull, played really well, and I said ‘Lads, I fancy us to go all the way’.”

Although, the 26-year old did warn that they haven’t achieved anything yet.

I haven’t been wrong yet – we just need to keep going in the next few games and really seal it.”

The Verdict

This shows the immediate impact that Santo had at Wolves that after just a few games players genuinely thought they’d win the league.

Of course, there’s still a long way to go but Wolves have got themselves in a great position to finish the job off.

Doherty has been key to the successful season and will need to maintain those high standards for the run-in.
