Championship outfit Wolves made an enquiry for Derby County striker Chris Martin on deadline day in a bid to bolster their attacking ranks, reports The Express and Star.

The 28-year-old moved to Pride Park back in 2013 after a long association with Norwich City, in which time he came up through the youth ranks to play 114 matches for the Canaries, bagging 32 goals in the process.

And he has translated that goal-scoring form into his Rams career by netting 63 goals in just 169 games for the East Midlands club, hitting double figures in all but one campaign on the books at Derby, with that one turning out to be last season following a loan spell away at Championship rivals Fulham.

And it seems that he was a man in-demand on deadline day last Thursday as well, as recent reports suggest that Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves made an enquiry for the 28-year-old as the Midlands outfit sought after striking reinforcements in the last knockings of the window.

Wolves have made a fine start to the new Championship season but let striker Nouha Dicko leave Molineux last week to link up with Leonid Slutsky’s Hull City, thus leaving boss Nuno Santo short on out-and-out striking options.

And Martin appears to be someone the club wanted to bring in to bolster those ranks, thus launching an enquiry for the Scotland international, yet they were left without a new striking addition as the deadline passed at 11pm on Thursday.

The Verdict: Nouha Dicko’s departure from Wolves last Wednesday left manager Nuno Espirito Santo short in the striking department, yet the former FC Porto boss would have unlikely sanctioned his exit without a ready-made replacement.

Yet the deadline passed without a striker coming to Molineux, although it wasn't through a lack of trying given they enquired about Derby County’s Chris Martin, a forward who scored ten goals in 30 games for Fulham while on loan at Craven Cottage last term.

The Scotsman has failed to start their last three Championship games to again suggest that he’s slightly low down on Gary Rowett’s pecking order, but with 80 goals in 259 second tier matches during his career, he’d be an asset for any side at that level.

But he’ll remain at Derby until January at least, and Wolves will thus have to go until the New Year with depleted striking options after their deadline day pursuit came up short.
