Former Portugal star Deco believes that Ruben Neves should remain at Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, according to Sky Sports News.

Neves has been the subject of interest from Manchester United and Liverpool but Deco believes that his fellow countryman should not rush a move to a big club.

Neves signed for Wolves for £15m last summer and thrived in the Wolves midfield, as he was nominated for the EFL Championship Player of the Year award and he helped his side win the title.

Deco told Sky Sports News: "At that time I didn't understand why they [FC Porto] sold him, but for him it was good because he's won the Championship, now he will be in the Premier League."

The 5-cap Portugal international has inevitably attracted interest from some major clubs this summer as a result of his top displays in the second tier.

But former Barcelona and Chelsea star Deco, who won 75 caps for his country, would rather see Neves stay at Molineux this summer.

Deco added: "He's doing his career step by step. Normally when a player is doing well, everybody says he needs to change to a big club, but I think he's doing his job. He needs to wait, he's young.

"He did well in the Championship when people maybe believed that would not be possible. If I was him I would just relax now and enjoy the Premier League. When Nuno went there the people in Portugal started to look at Wolves in a different way."

The Verdict

Deco speaks a lot of sense here; why would Neves risk a move to a big club where he might not get much game time if he is playing at the top level with Wolves anyway.

Now in the top flight, the 21-year-old can show everyone what he can do in one of the top divisions in the world and then perhaps he will be ready to make a big move next summer.

And for Wolves, if Neves has an excellent year in the Premier League, they have more chance of success in the top flight and they can command an even higher price for their star man next summer.

The good news for Wolves fans is that Neves is likely to listen to Deco because of his status as a Portuguese legend and a role model for the young midfielder.
