Wolves are edging ahead of several Premier League sides as they look to finalise a deal with West Brom for striker Salomon Rondon.

That's according to the Express & Star, who say that Wanderers have been in contact with their local rivals and are making progress as they try and bring in the target man.

However, they do state that the top-flight outfit haven't met the £16.5m release clause for the Venezuela striker who only has 12 months left on his contract at The Hawthorns.

Although the report adds that a deal is not imminent, with several other sides watching on.

One of those are Newcastle United, with Rondon spending last season with the Magpies where he enjoyed a very impressive campaign, scoring 11 goals and contributing seven assists for Rafa Benitez's side.

But, the uncertainty surrounding the Spanish manager means that they have been yet to commit to a deal.

West Brom will look to move on the former Zenit man as they look to provide their new manager with the funds to finance a promotion push.

The Verdict

It would be a surprise for Albion to agree a deal that is less than the £16.5m clause because that's a fair price in today's market for Rondon.

And, you certainly wouldn't expect them to agree such a fee with their bitter rivals, as the fans would much rather Rondon went anywhere instead of Molineux.

It does seem as this has a long way to run though and Newcastle still appears to be a real possibility if Benitez stays.
