Wolves are back on top of the Championship after they fought for a 2-0 win at the Madejski Stadium yesterday.

Wing-back Matt Doherty admitted there was ‘a little bit of pressure’ on the team after Sheffield United had gone top on Friday night after they’d comfortably beaten Burton Albion.

However Wolves responded with all three points, although the result doesn’t reflect the performance. The leaders had their backs to the wall at times, with John Ruddy making some critical saves towards the end and the Irishman acknowledged just how much Reading pushed them when speaking to the club's media.

Definitely that was one of the hardest games we’ve had. Even first 20 minutes we were thinking ‘these boys are really on it today’. They’re a good team and they’ve got some good players.”

We rode our luck a little bit, but that’s what happens, we’re throwing our body’s in the way, doing anything we can to not concede.”

A nervy stoppage time period was prevented by Doherty’s goal and he revealed he was glad to have got his first of the season. “I’ve missed some good chances this season, so it’s nice to finally get one!

The Verdict

Reading deserved something from the game yesterday going by the chances created but Wolves showed a resilience and determination that hasn’t really been required so far this season to grind out a win.

It will please the fans that they displayed this side of their game as there will be many more games like that over the course of the season.

Matt Doherty has given a very honest account here and deserves full credit for showing the energy and willingness to attack so late on for his very well-taken goal that sealed the win.
