Wolves are hoping to get themselves to the front of  the queue to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips stayed at Elland Road in the summer despite a host of rumours linking him with a move away from the club as Aston Villa made it known they were keen on landing the midfielder.

However, with no deal done in the summer and contract talks as yet failing to yield any success between Leeds and Phillips, Wolves are eyeing a January move to land Phillips.

According to the Sun on Sunday (print edition, 11th August 2019), Wolves are hoping that the Whites will lower their asking price for Phillips if no new deal is sorted out with manager Nuno Santo a big admirer of the midfielder's talents.

Phillips has become an integral part of the set-up at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa as he fallen nicely into a deep lying midfield role which has seen the making of him as a player.

Football Insider has earlier reported that Phillips could be set to demand a £10m contract in order to stay put at Elland Road, and that sort of money could well put Leeds off even though they regard him as a key player.

Wolves are not averse to splashing the cash when needed and will see Phillips as the ideal player to sit and anchor the midfield in Santo's attacking 3-4-3 formation.

The Verdict

It seems like this one is going to rumble on for some time and it's going to be a big test of Leeds' resolve and ambition in terms of a new deal for Phillips.

He's somehow managed to put himself in a position to negotiate and make demands from the club, and while it's disappointing to see in some capacity, you can see Phillips' point in wanting to test himself at the highest level.

He's a class act, but the timing of any deal is going to be crucial and Leeds won't want to leave themselves short in terms of a transfer fee and then lose him for nothing.
