Portsmouth's League One play-off bid received a huge boost yesterday when promising defender Matt Clarke signed an extended contract at Fratton Park which runs until 2020.

However, it was a rare blow for Championship table toppers Wolves, in a season where nearly everything has gone right for Nuno Santo's men, as per the Daily Mirror print edition on Thursday 15 February, page 58.

Wolves are now 11 point clear at the top of the Championship, so far ahead that they can already start planning their transfer activity for the top flight and Clarke was reportedly one they held an interest in.

21-year-old centre back Clarke has scored five goals in 101 appearances for Pompey which spans his initial loan spell at the club from Ipswich Town and his subsequent permanent transfer in 2016.

The Verdict

Wolves' interest in Clarke does not bode well for Kortney Hause, who has found himself down the pecking order this season and the arrival of another young English centre back would surely have spent the end for him at Molienux.

Clarke's contract extension might just give him a reprieve but would the former Ipswich man really say no if Wolves came calling in the summer and offered him the chance to be a Premier League player?
