Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has revealed that he is ‘very confident’ that the team will have enough to secure promotion despite their recent form.

A heavy 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday saw Wolves’ lead at the top cut to just three points from second-placed Cardiff, whilst they sit seven ahead of their West Midlands rivals.

It means Wolves have won just one in five, with Cardiff gaining ten points on them in the process.

With Villa and Fulham also flying, it has left some Wolves fans worried they could see their side fall out of the top two by May.

However, Shi told the Express & Star that he isn’t panicking.

To the fans I say, we understand the emotions but we're very confident. I know our team, what they're doing and the games to come. I'm very confident we can finish strongly.”

He also called on the fans to continue to back the team.

The only thing I hope is for the fans to support us, they don't need to worry about our mentality. Success comes from the fans and us being together and we need encouragement to help us over the line.”

The Verdict

There’s no doubt that Wolves fans will be slightly nervous after the defeat on Saturday, so Shi’s message has come at the right time.

Of course, the chairman has to back his manager and players no matter what so you can’t really read too much into it.

Ultimately, it’s down to the players to rediscover their early-season form – starting tomorrow night against Reading.
