Wolves boss preparing to axe a number of players in January

New Wolves boss Paul Lambert has confirmed his plans to trim the squad in January as he aims to get the first-team numbers down to 23, The Express & Star reports.

Lambert has inherited a huge squad at Molineux which stands at 30 members when fully fit, which means the upcoming transfer window is likely to be extremely busy in the Midlands as players are offloaded and new faces are brought in.

Stating that a large squad is bad for fitness and training, Lambert confirmed his intentions to trim the squad next month and joked that his side was almost as large as the casting for a Hollywood move.

“There’s more people than in Ben Hur! And there were thousands in that movie.”

“You need an abacus to count how many we’ve got. It’s something we have to look at. We need to trim the squad, there’s no two ways about it. You can’t have that many when you train – one, you lose fitness with everybody else and two, there’s just too many.

“It’s still high even with the injured lads. I’d say 23 would be an optimum number.”

Lambert also stated he’s looking at potential new signings in January, with a number of areas he wants to improve.

“I’ve got it in my head where we need to be stronger. We’ll have meetings in the coming weeks – there are a few positions we’re looking at.”

Meanwhile, on the pitch, Paul Lambert’s men face a tough test against Slavisa Jokanovic’s in-form Fulham at Molineux tomorrow.

The London outfit have just come off the back of a rampant 5-0 victory over Reading last weekend, and will be looking to secure another three points at lowly Wolves.
