Wolves boss comments on Sheffield United striker’s loan status

Wolves boss Bruno Lage has offered Morgan Gibbs-White some words of encouragement for the on-loan forward.

Gibbs-White had been back with Wolves to get a knee injury scanned, but Lage has comforted the player by confirming he will stay out on loan with Sheffield United for the remainder of the season.

The 21-year old has been a key player for the Blades so far this season, contributing five goals and four assists from 16 games this campaign.

“I’m very happy with Morgan,” said Lage, via the Sheffield Star

“I spoke with him two days ago and I am very happy. We think we took the best decision in the beginning [to loan him to United] and he’s playing well.

“Paul [Heckingbottom] is a great manager who I know from when he was working at Barnsley. So I know he is in good hands and we will see. I am very happy with Morgan and Morgan knows that.”

Sander Berge

The two sides actually faced off last weekend, with Wolves coming out 3-0 victors in the Third Round of the FA Cup.

That has eliminated Sheffield United from the competition for 2022 and so now all their focus will turn to fighting for a play-off place in the Championship. The hope will be that Gibbs-White can continue his form to help charge that rise up the table.

Heckingbottom’s side are currently 13th in the league table, but have won their last four league games in a row.

The Blades are eight points adrift from sixth place Huddersfield Town, but they do have four games in hand on their rivals.

United’s next game is a trip to Derby County, who are bottom of the Championship. The two sides will meet on January 15.

The Verdict

This is a good endorsement of Gibbs-White’s progress so far this season that Lage is happy with his performances.

Wolves have one too many players ahead of him in the pecking order to guarantee him enough game time to make it worth recalling him.

However, it is also a sign of Heckingbottom’s work with the club that there is no indication that Wolves will be looking for Gibbs-White to move up the Championship ladder to better gain experience.
