Wolverhampton Wanderers reject bid from Championship rivals for 24-year-old

Sheffield United’s bid to sign Conor Coady from Wolverhampton Wanderers has been rejected by the Molineux outfit, according to the Mirror’s live blog (10/8, 07:38).

Chris Wilder confirmed that the Blades hade made an ambitious move to bring Coady back to Bramall Lane – where he spent time on-loan during the 2013/14 season.

However, this morning’s reports claim that Wolves have rejected that bid for the 24-year-old, who captained the club during pre-season and their opening day victory over Middlesbrough.

Coady looks set to be a major part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans at Molineux for the 2017/18 campaign, taking up a new position in the centre of Wolves’ back-three.

The 24-year-old was preferred to Danny Batth on the opening day of the season, partnering Willy Boly and Roderick Miranda in central defence.

It remains to be seen whether Wilder and Sheffield United return with a fresh bid for Coady, as they look to bolster their squad on their return to the Sky Bet Championship.

Wilder has already signed the likes of Richard Stearman, George Baldock and Enda Stevens to bolster his options in defence.

Like Wolves, the Blades began the Championship season with a 1-0 victory, with Wilder’s side overcoming Brentford, thanks to a Billy Sharp goal.

The Verdict

Sheffield United’s bid for Coady was ambitious, but it was no surprise to see it rejected by Wolves, who obviously see the player as vital heading into the new season.

Wolves have shown huge ambition this summer, and it is likely that unless a jaw-dropping offer arrives, Coady will be staying at Molineux.

After a stale few years in the Championship, Wolves’ supporters will be encouraged by the noises their club is making so far this summer.
