Sunderland failed to close the gap on the top two in League One as they were beaten by promotion rivals Coventry City this afternoon.

An early goal from Matt Godden gave the Sky Blues the lead and that was all they needed in what was a feisty encounter at St. Andrew's.

Whilst the Black Cats pushed for an equaliser, and rightly had a second-half strike ruled out for offside, they didn't create or do enough in the final third.

A reason for that was the performance of Charlie Wyke, with the target man struggling to hold the ball up and bring others into play, and he didn't provide enough of a goal threat.

That was certainly the feeling of many supporters, who expected more from the ex-Bradford man in what is a crucial position in the way Phil Parkinson's side set up.
