Chris Hughton has revealed that Brennan Johnson is likely to stay at Lincoln City for the remainder of the season.

The Nottingham Forest youngster has enjoyed a fruitful campaign at Lincoln so far, scoring seven goals and registering a number of assists for the Imps.

The 19-year-old has been one of their standout performers this season, as Michael Appleton's side continue to fight for promotion in League One.

With Forest struggling for goals from midfield, many fans have been calling for Johnson to be recalled by Forest this month.

But speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Hughton admitted: "There would be numerous occasions where somebody goes out on loan and you find they’re not playing so much.

"At the moment, probably my thoughts are more very much that he’s better off there. “We look forward to him hopefully having a very good season. And then the summer becomes a different story." Is this the right decision by Hughton? We discuss... Sam Rourke Without a shadow of a doubt. The 19-year-old is enjoying a stellar stint on loan at Lincoln City and has become a key cog in Michael Appleton's Imps side. This is exactly what Forest will want to be seeing, one of their most exciting young talents thriving out on loan, developing and maturing as a player week by week. The current Forest squad is inflated to say the least and had Forest decided to recall Johnson, there would have been no guarantees that he'd be given a regular starting berth. Lincoln are winning consistently at the moment and are fighting for promotion from League One, so it's the perfect platform for Johnson to be involved in a team with such a winning mentality. It's the right decision, and in the summer when he returns to the City Ground, it will almost feel like a brand new signing. Ned Holmes Yes, in the long run I think this is the right call from Nottingham Forest. Johnson has been excellent for the Imps this term and the experience he will gain as a key man in their promotion push in the second half of the season could be fantastic for his development. Forest look as though they're going to be safe, for me, and with the play-offs off the table, there's no need to bring the young midfielder back if they're not 100% convinced he's going to be playing week in, week out. Given the size of Hughton's squad, they can't be sure of that and at his age, Johnson may benefit more from thriving at League One level than scrapping with a Championship side that are struggling for fluency. Forest's decision-making in recent years has often been suspect and rarely done with a huge amount of foresight, this is the opposite of that.

Quiz: Are these 15 Nottingham Forest facts genuine or not?

Jacob Potter I do think this is the right call. Johnson has really impressed me out on loan with Lincoln City, and it's a move that will play a key role in furthering his development in senior football. He's still early into his career, and needs to be playing regularly for a team, and the Imps can guarantee him that this season, as they battle to win promotion into the Championship. Nottingham Forest already have some strong options available to them in a similar position to that of Johnson's, so it wouldn't have been a wise move to recall him from his loan spell with the League One side. If he continues to build on some strong performances this term, then I wouldn't be surprised if Lincoln City were to win promotion this term. I can see him challenging for a starting spot in the Nottingham Forest squad next season though, especially if he can continue to impress for the Imps.
