Sunderland are hoping to end a two-season spell in League One with the Black Cats in the hunt for promotion this term.

The Wearside club made it to the League One play-off final last term but condemned to a second season in the third tier following their last gasp defeat to Charlton Athletic.

January's transfer window saw the club bring in five new faces including striker Kyle Lafferty and defender Bailey Wright as Phil Parkinson bolstered his squad to challenge for promotion.

Sunderland boast a rather large squad at the moment and it is possible that in the summer manager Phil Parkinson will look to offload some of the current players in the side.

Here we take a look at two Sunderland players who will surely be eyeing a fresh start once the summer arrives...

Will Grigg

Grigg was heavily linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light in the January window, with The Sun on Sunday (15/12, p61) reporting that Blackpool were keeping tabs on the 28-year-old.

The Sun's Alan Nixon also suggested in January that Swindon Town or Salford City could be possible destinations for the former Wigan Athletic man but none of these moves materialised, with the Sunderland Echo reporting Grigg turned down a move to the latter.

The Northern Irishman arrived at Sunderland during the 2019 January window but has failed to live up to expectations.

Although there will be two years remaining on Grigg's contract come the summer, it looks likely that the 28-year-old could pursue a fresh start away from Wearside at the end of the season.

Aiden McGeady

The 33-year-old is currently on-loan at Championship club Charlton Athletic, where he has appeared twice for Lee Bowyer's men since joining in January.

McGeady has revealed to the South London Press that himself and Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson not seeing eye-to-eye is the factor in him joining Charlton in January.

Come the summer McGeady will still have a year left on his Sunderland contract and with the probability of Parkinson remaining in charge at the Stadium of Light, it looks likely the 33-year-old will be looking for a fresh start elsewhere.

Charlton could well be a choice for the winger, with McGeady tell the South London Press that: "If that was a possibility – staying beyond the end of the season – then, of course, it’s something I’d be looking at."

Whether it is with Charlton or another club it won't be a surprise to see McGeady leave Sunderland over the summer.

Are these Sunderland facts true or false?
