It has been a very frustrating few months for Nathan Jones since he took over at Stoke City, with the former Luton boss unable to make an immediate impact at his new club.

That's understandable though, as there were clearly a lot of problems with the Staffordshire outfit, which is why Gary Rowett lost his job.

Even though many felt the Potters were going to bounce back to the Premier League instantly, backed up by the fact they were pre-season title favourites, the reality is the players haven't delivered how many expected.

And, defender Ashley Williams is arguably the biggest example of that.

The Wales international has won 85 caps for his country and starred as they reached the semi-finals of a major competition only a few years ago.

As well as that, he had been a very consistent performer for Swansea over the years and had a decent first season after a move to Everton.

So, even though he struggled at Goodison Park in his second season, it was still a big step down to the Championship and he was seen as the experienced, tough defender that would lead this side back up.

However, it hasn't worked like that at all, with Williams looking a shadow of his former self and he hasn't even been a regular this season.

Therefore, even though the player recently admitted that he doesn't know if he has a future at the Bet365 Stadium, the answer should be pretty clear.

Jones needs to have a major clearout this summer and they need to move on overpaid, underperforming players and unfortunately Williams falls into that category on this season.

The summer recruitment focused too much on experienced players and you would say that it's a squad that needs freshening up, with younger, hungry additions to bring an energy back to the place.

Again, that's not Williams and if Jones is going to be a success at Stoke he needs to make some big decisions this summer, although not signing the centre-back again should be one of the easier calls he makes.
