Ipswich Town will receive over £2million from West Ham's signing of Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes, a report from The East Anglian Daily Times has revealed.

Downes left Ipswich only last summer to join Swansea, having made 99 appearances in all competitions for the Tractor Boys between 2017 and 2021.

However, just a year on from that, the midfielder could be on the move again, with it being reported that West Ham are set to pay Swansea £12million to secure his services.

Now it seems as though that in turn, will provide Ipswich themselves with a welcome financial boost as a result of that deal.

According to this latest update, a clause inserted in the deal that took Downes from Ipswich to Swansea last summer, entitled the League One club to between 20 and 25% of any profit the Welsh outfit made on the 23-year-old.

As a result, it is now thought that will receive between £2.1million and £2.5million from this transfer, having apparently sold Downes to Swansea for £1.5million last summer.

During the current transfer window, Ipswich have so far made four first-team signings, Freddie Ladapo, Dom Ball and Greg Leigh have joined permanently on free transfers, while Tyreece John-Jules has signed on loan from Arsenal.

It is suggested that Ipswich are now likely to spend transfer fee on much of their business through the rest of this market.

The Verdict

This will no doubt be welcome news for those of an Ipswich Town persuasion.

The club have already made some eye-catching this summer, as they target a push for promotion back to the Championship next season.

However, the influx of these funds will give them extra scope to invest this summer, which should allow them to strengthen their squad even further.

With that in mind, this clause looks to have been an excellent piece of business for Ipswich, especially considering it will bring them a bigger fee than they received for the sale of Downes in the first place.
