Former Macclesfield Town manager Sol Campbell has backed the winding-up petition against the club by HM Revenue & Customs.

Sol Campbell left the Silkmen in August amid serious financial troubles after keeping them in the Football League on the final day of the season.

It has been no secret this season that Macclesfield are under financial turmoil having started the season by parting company with Campbell and delaying the payment of his salary. It was the former Arsenal centre-back’s first job in management and while it ended with him achieving what he set out to do, it has left a bitter taste with the club still embroiled in drama with Campbell.

Following his departure, the Silkmen have found themselves sitting well clear of the relegation zone by nine points in 14th place in League Two. However, financial issues going in the background have bubbled to the surface with the club failing to pay its players and staff for the month of October, followed by the first-team refusing to play because of this when they faced Kingstonian in the FA Cup first round proper last month. Macclesfield lost the game 4-0.

Sol Campbell has now backed a winding-up petition set up by HM Revenue & Customs as the now Southend manager is owed £180,000 by the club after his departure. The club will appear in front of the court again on 18th of December over their various debts.
