Football League World's Charlton Athletic fan pundit Robert Smith has given his honest thoughts on the club's signing of former Sunderland right-back Adam Matthews.

The Addicks confirmed the 27-year-old's arrival on Thursday, putting pen-to-paper on an initial two-year deal after leaving Sunderland in the summer and Smith believes that it is a move that completes an impressive period of transfer business.

"It seems a solid signing for us," the regular punter told Football League World.

"He's a Wales international, played at this level for Cardiff and Sunderland and also played European football with over 150 appearances for Celtic.

"The right-back role has been the last piece in a well put together jigsaw from us I feel and we now have cover for every position in the team after losing Dijksteel to Middlesbrough in the summer.

"I feel that Matthews experience will really serve us well as we look maintain this fantastic form."

During his four years at the Stadium of Light Matthews made just 67 appearances, notching two goals and nine assists, but was let go in the summer with the Black Cats needing to trim their wage bill.

His primary competition for the right-back spot comes in the form of Charlton veteran Chris Solly, somebody who has played 300 times for the Addicks, given the manager a dilemma for the rest of the season.

It takes Lee Bowyer's summer activity to a total of 15 new signings as he looks to ready his side for life back in the Championship.

And it is a case of so far so good, with the South-East Londoners currently sat in second-place with six matches played, winning four and drawing two as we enter the international break.
