Will Keane starts: The predicted Wigan Athletic XI to face Portsmouth on Tuesday

Wigan Athletic could seal automatic promotion and the League One title when they play away to Portsmouth on Tuesday evening.

Danny Cowley’s men have been very impressive in patches this season, but on the whole have not been consistent enough to launch a sustained play-off bid.

The Latics on the other hand have been the most consistent team in the division, and Leam Richardson deserves a tremendous amount of credit for bringing together a very different squad to the one that was battling against relegation for the vast majority of the 2020/21 campaign.

Whether Wigan win the title at Fratton Park or not, may depend on the result between Sunderland and Rotherham United, however a draw will be enough to seal promotion.

Here, we are predicting one change from the side that drew 1-1 with Plymouth Argyle last time out…

Kell Watts comes in for Tom Pearce as the only change.

An alteration that sees Joe Bennett move to left wing back, allowing the specialist centre back, Watts, to slot in on the left of the back three.

With the knowledge that a clean sheet seals promotion, and without a win in four games, it could be a back to basics approach from Richardson, to ensure they get over the line.

Jack Whatmough and Tom Naylor have been two particularly impressive summer acquisitions, and they will line-up against their former employers hoping to achieve what they had failed to, once in the famous blue jersey at Fratton Park.

Will Keane and Callum Lang have been amongst the best forwards in the division this season and could make a decisive contribution to drag Wigan back to the Championship.
