Sunderland striker Will Grigg has labelled his miss against Blackpool as the most of embarrassing moment of his career, reports Chronicle Live.

The 27-year-old, who signed from Wigan Athletic in January for a fee of £4million, was brought in by Sunderland boss Jack Ross to fire the Black Cats to promotion, after top goalscorer Josh Maja departed for Bordeaux last month.

But Grigg, who scored his first goal for the Black Cats with a penalty against Gillingham on Tuesday night, had the perfect opportunity to open his account for the North East club a week earlier.

The Northern Ireland international made his home debut against play-off chasers Blackpool less than a fortnight ago, but as the Black Cats searched for an equaliser, Grigg rounded Mark Howard and shot wide, missing a completely open goal.

Jack Baldwin ultimately spared Grigg's blushes with an equaliser late on, but after speaking to the Mail Online Q&A via the Chronicle, the striker labelled his miss as the most embarrassing of his career.

"I haven't had that many (embarrassing moments), but in my first home game for Sunderland against Blackpool this month, I took the ball around the keeper and then managed to miss from eight yards out with an empty goal waiting.

"That was pretty embarrassing because it was my first home game and because the club had paid a big fee for me - that certainly added to the scenario."

Sunderland's hunt for automatic promotion is well and truly still on after a 4-2 win over the Gills on Tuesday - Jack Ross' men sit four points off the top two with a game in hand on Barnsley.

The Verdict

It was an extraordinary miss and one that everyone would have expected Grigg to score - but he is an experienced professional who has put it behind him.

I think everyone concerned with the North East club would have been delighted to see Grigg score on Tuesday, as you get the feeling that once he found the back of the net, he has the ability to go on and score freely now.
