Will Grigg secured a deadline day move to Rotherham United, as part of a season-long loan deal from Sunderland.

The Northern Ireland international joined The Black Cats in January 2019 for a fee believed to be around the £3 million mark.

However, upon reflection on his time with Sunderland thus far, the 30-year-old admitted it just has not worked out, during an interview with the Sunderland Echo.

Grigg has scored eight times in 62 appearances for The Wearsiders, and after seeing little game time during the first half of last season, he joined MK Dons in January.

Scoring eight times and assisting a further three in the 20 League One games he played last season, Grigg enjoyed a productive loan spell away from the Stadium of Light, and he will be hoping to recapture that form in a Rotherham shirt.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo about his contract situation and his time with the club, he said: "My loan is to the end of the season and then I am out of contract.

“It is not something we have spoken about, but of course if the loan goes well and the club are happy to see what happens, then that is definitely we will consider further down the line.

"If I could put my finger on it, I would have changed it and made it work a long time ago. It just didn't work and it seems like it was never going to."

"I have been training to a really high standard at Sunderland, even though I have not got the minutes recently. I am still that same player and goalscorer."

The verdict

Will Grigg has proved to be an excellent scorer of goals over the years, and he has particularly shone in League One.

He is an intelligent player, who knows when to stretch the defence, but can also fool defenders by coming short and linking up the play.

With consistent game time, Grigg can have an excellent season with The Millers this season, as displayed last time out when regular football came his way with The Dons.

In Paul Warne's side, there is no doubting that he will get the opportunities to bolster his goalscoring record, as Rotherham are a side who tend to create lots of chances.
