Bolton Wanderers seriously lacked firepower up front last season, it is what left them languishing so near to the drop zone.

In fact, their safety was only confirmed on the last day of the season as Barnsley were relegated to League One instead.

They only scored 39 goals all in their 38 league matches with Sammy Ameobi, Adam Le Fondre and Aaron Wilbraham scoring just 13 goals between them. Only Birmingham and Burton managed less (both 38).

So could their new signing make the difference?

Clayton Donaldson was deemed surplus to requirements at Bramall Lane at the end of last season so was brought to the Macron on a free.

Here we take a closer look at Phil Parkinson's new marksman.

At 34 he definitely is not a long-term solution at the Macron. His powers at this level are also clearly waining having not scored over 10 goals in a season since the 2015/16 campaign.

Will he actually score any more than the strikers Bolton already have? It's hard to believe he will.

Five goals in 30 appearances (many as a substitute admittedly), is still a poor return and nowhere near high enough to be called a good signing.

If Bolton are to improve next season it is important that they are not relying on out of sorts strikers like Donaldson to carry them.

Of course, there's a chance that the 34-year-old could rediscover the scoring touch he showed with Brentford and Birmingham, but it would be sensible to move for a more in-form striker.

Potential targets could be the likes of Bret Pittman or Mo Eisa. Going for someone like Donaldson would leave Phil Parkinson and his team treading water and in no better position than they currently are come May.
