Will Boyle reveals reason behind joining Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town announced the signing of Will Boyle this week from Cheltenham Town.

Boyle started his career with the Terriers coming up through their academy and being part of the first team squad for three seasons though he only made two appearances in that time.

After a series of loan spells, the defender departed the club in 2017 to join Cheltenham and since being with the Robins, he has been a regular for six seasons and part of the squad that gained promotion to League One this season.

After impressive form this season, the 26-year-old received plenty of interest from clubs including Sheffield Wednesday, Preston North End and Portsmouth although he has confirmed his return to his old club was based on football alone as he told The Yorkshire Post: “It is nice and it almost feels like a bit of a full circle in five years to be waling back around it.

“There’s home comforts almost, but it didn’t play a massive factor in the decision, to be honest. It is an added bonus, but did not affect the decision.

“It was putting emotion aside in looking the club and [thinking] is this going to be the best club to help my development and I think it will be.

“It’s looking at the environment as a whole. It was disappointing to just miss out on the Premier League, but what has been created here behind the scenes – not just the squad, but the staff – means that it is a place where people develop.

“That was clear form the outside looking in and obviously speaking to the club, it was made even clearer to me. That was a major factor.

“It’s the way the club develops people and players in an environment where you are going to get the best out of yourself. You are going to be given every tool possible to do that. I am 26 now and it is a massive platform and great opportunity for me to kick on.

“There is obviously an emotional attachment here. I was here in the academy and in the development centre when I was eight or nine years old and joined the academy when I was 15 and was here for five or six years.

“But I tried my best when making the decision to put that aside to try and make the best decision for my career. I am looking forward to getting out there and showing I am now back as a proper first team player.”

Huddersfield signed Matty Pearson from Luton Town

The Verdict:

Of course, there is a personal element to this transfer and coming back to his former club was always going to be special for the player especially as he looks at how far he’s come in his career.

But like he says himself, this move is probably the best one for his career out of the options he had too. They are a strong team with a brilliant manager in charge and the fact they just missed out on promotion to the top flight shows where they are as a side and what they are aiming for.

There will no doubt be some pressure on the defender as he aims to prove why he is back at the club and that he is worthy of his place in the squad. However, the fans will be sure to show him full support as one of their own and he will be hoping he can develop his career from this move.
