Harry Redknapp is certainly leading a revolution at Birmingham City this summer having guided the Blues to safety on the final day of the season last term, and is shaping his squad to challenge further up the table next semester.

A number of new faces have joined the club since the window opened, but it is one player on his way out who has divided opinion amongst fans of the second city club.

Turkish winger Kerim Frei joined the club in January following four years in his homeland with giants Besiktas, and optimism spread around the club following the signing of what many considered to be a coup.

Born in Austria, Frei joined the youth setup at Fulham before making 23 appearances for the Cottagers, and moved to Turkey following a short loan spell with Cardiff City.

Frei is an extremely talented wide man with an excellent delivery, and Brum fans will be disappointed that Redknapp did not afford the player an opportunity in his new look side.

Instead the 23-year-old has headed back to Turkey with surprise league runners up Istanbul Basaksehir, who will be competing for a spot in the Champions League this season via the play-off rounds following their second place finish last year.

Frei will be delighted with the switch having not been given an opportunity under Redknapp, but Blues fans will wonder what might have been as they bid the player farewell.

Frei promised much whilst emerging from Fulham’s youth set up, and will perhaps fulfil his potential with the Turkish club.

Undoubtedly the player would have been a decent addition to the Birmingham squad next season, but fans must place their faith in Redknapp, and will pray that Frei does not become a surprise star of Europe’s premier competition this season, should his new club navigate the qualifying rounds.
