Sheffield Wednesday are one of the clubs interested in Jack Tucker after Gillingham's relegation from League One, according to journalist Alan Nixon. 

The 22-year-old centre-back has been offered new terms by the Gills but is out of contract and looks likely to leave, with Wednesday said to be among the clubs keen.

But would he be a good signing? And do they need him?

Marcus Ally

With very few centre-backs at the club on deals going into next season, Jack Tucker would be an excellent pick-up for the Owls, especially if Darren Moore is to stick with a three at the back system once again in 2022/23.

Tucker has gained a lot of experience for his age in the last few seasons at Priestfield Stadium, and the 22-year-old certainly represents value in the market with his contract expiring this summer.

Compensation will be involved due to Tucker still being under 23, but considering the quality of the player that should be worthwhile for Wednesday.

At a cut-price Tucker will be on many League One shortlists and it would be a statement if the Owls win the race for his signature.

Alfie Burns

Tucker looks like he will be a really good pick-up for someone this summer following Gillingham’s relegation.

He played a high number of minutes for the League One outfit last season and was one of the more reliable performers in a disappointing campaign.

Darren Moore is probably going to have to look at evolving some of his defensive options this summer, looking to bring through a younger pool to start squeezing out some of the more senior players that have been relied on there.

At 22, Tucker is at a great age and has plenty of potential.

Sticking him in a better side should bring out the best in him, which makes him a really decent target for the Owls this summer.

Billy Mulley

I think Gillingham boss Neil Harris summed it up perfectly when he said that Jack Tucker is too good to be playing League Two football next season.

Possessing excellent ability on the ball, Tucker fits the modern-day criteria of being a central defender, with his ball progression and passing range justifying a move to a high-aspiring League One club like the Owls.

He also reads the game excellently well, whilst he also tends to dominate his defensive battles, proving to be a defender with lots of desirable attributes.

The Owls will be ambitious following play-off heartbreak this season, with Tucker representing an option who can play a part in the here and now, whilst he could also cut at higher levels in the future.

It is no real surprise that Tucker is attracting interest, but it would also be no shock if a Championship club swoops in.
