Grimsby Town set up a huge EFL Cup clash with Chelsea last night, after finally overcoming a stubborn Macclesfield Town side.
The original clash between the two was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch, facilitating last night’s replay. On a sharp autumnal night at Blundell Park, neither side could find a deadlock. The two teams are level on points in the hunt for a play-off spot in League Two and 90 minutes of football failed to bring a goal to separate them in the cup.
That took the match to penalties where Grimsby’s Matt Green missed the opening spot-kick. Fraser Horsfall missed for Macclesfield, meaning that when Elliott Whitehouse scored the first of sudden death, the pressure was on Connor Kirby. James McKeown saved his effort and set up a mouthwatering clash with the Premier League giants at Stamford Bridge.
That’s given the long-suffering Mariners fans plenty to cheer about. They’re looking likely to sustain a promotion challenge this season after three tough years in League Two, but they also now have a huge cup tie to look forward to.
It’s not just the players relishing the chance to have a go at Chelsea, the supporters are delighted that they’ll be on the road as well, as you’ll see from their Twitter messages below.

Buzzing. I am a Chelsea fan but through family connections Grimsby are my second team. Enjoyed many a day out with my Grandad before he passed away. This will be more than just a game for me. UTM 👍 @officialgtfc @ChelseaFC

Great penalty mate, thought the keeper had got to it but couldn't of been any more perfect
