“Will be disappointed” – Pundit assess situation after Rangers beat West Brom to 28-year-old

West Brom target Tom Lawrence secured a move to Rangers last week, with the 28-year-old arriving north of the border as a free agent following his Derby County release.

Steve Bruce remained interested in a move for the 28-year-old, even after the additions of John Swift and Jed Wallace, whilst Sheffield United were another interested party.

Making 60 goal contributions in just over 180 appearances for the Rams, Lawrence proved to be an important figure at pride Park during his time with the Midlands club.

Sharing his thoughts on Lawrence’s move to Rangers and whether it will be seen as a blow for the Baggies, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “Steve had highlighted Tom as one of the players that he would have liked to have brought to the club. But obviously, Tom’s a very sought-after player.

“I think an opportunity like that for him (joining Rangers) would have been too good an opportunity to turn down.

“Steve will be disappointed because obviously when you target players, you’d like to get them in and pass the post.

What squad number did Kyle Bartley wear on 21/22?

“But when players like Tom become available on a free it becomes very, very difficult (to win the race).”

The verdict

It would have been very interesting to see how Bruce would have tried to fit Lawrence, Wallace and Swift into the same team if a move to West Brom came to fruition.

But as Palmer points out, once players of Lawrence’s ability become available on a free, it is always a difficult race to win.

Lawrence is a top addition for Rangers as they look to steer the title away from Celtic once more, with the 28-year-old a creative threat who is also clinical in front of goal.

It will be interesting to see if Bruce looks to add any more creative options during what remains of this summer, as the Baggies chase a return to the Premier League.
