Former Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder has admitted that quitting the Cobblers for his hometown side Sheffield United was a difficult decision, in an interview with the Northampton Chronicle & Echo.

Having led the rampant Cobblers to the title with 99 points in Sky Bet League Two, Wilder left the club with Charlton Athletic, Sheffield United, and Blackburn Rovers all showing an interest in the 48-year-old manager.

However, after a week of turmoil, where it looked like he was expected to be appointed by Charlton but the talks broke down about questions of handling of transfers and having operational control, he was instead appointed the manager of Sheffield United following the sacking of manager Nigel Adkins.

In the interview, Wilder spoke of the tough decisions that football managers have to make with their immediate futures constantly under threat if results don't go their way, and the difficulty he had leaving Northampton Town after such a successful season.

He told the Northampton Chronicle: 'Everybody knows my history with Sheffield United, from being a young ball-boy, a supporter, a young player at the club, right the way through really.

'It has been a mad couple of days, but I don’t think anybody can deny taking me this opportunity and look back with anything negative about me joining this club.'

As a self-proclaimed ambitious manager, Wilder's next hope will be to lead Sheffield United back to the Championship, five years on since their relegation at the end of 2010/11 season.

Where next for Northampton is unclear, but Wilder has provided the solid foundations of a good quality squad and a winning mentality, which will be an enticing combination for any manager that takes up the opportunity.
