Chris Wilder thinks that the board deserve credit for putting the club's future above anything else.

The 50-year-old recently signed a one-year extension to his current contract after being linked with a move away due to becoming frustrated with the ownership issues.

The clarity over his future is good news for the club because he has presided over a successful spell which has seen them move from League One to six points off of the Championship play-offs in two seasons. Allowing him to build on this promising season back in the Championship avoids instability and increases the chances of them being able to build on that.

Here's what he had to say about the board to the official United site:

"The owners, both of them, deserve credit for the discussions I've had with them and the way they've talked about the future of this football club, which always is and always should be the main focus.

"I'm just glad it's been resolved in this manner and both the owners deserve enormous amount of credit for putting disagreements to one side for the good of the football club.

"We've been given funds to improve and I honestly believe we are in a great position to challenge in what is a really difficult division, that will be as strong as ever."

The Verdict

These comments were always likely to be positive after he extended his stay, but the fact that he made the decision in the first place is reassuring. His concerns seemed genuine, so he was unlikely to stay unless he was given certain assurances.

It may be a bit far to praise the owners for actually acting in the club's interests, but this was an important decision by them which is likely to please United fans. They would have struggled to find a manager who could do better with this team, and it will be interesting to see who Wilder brings in because this is a key summer transfer window if they want to keep up that momentum behind their progress over the last few seasons.
