Wilder issues honest message on recent Sheffield United departure

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Chris Wilder has been discussing Cameron Carter-Vickers’ departure from Sheffield United this week, admitting it was a decision made by the Sky Bet Championship outfit.

It was announced earlier this week that Carter-Vickers would be returning to Tottenham Hotspur at the midpoint of his season-long loan with the Blades, with the Championship outfit surprisingly ending a largely successful spell.

Carter-Vickers had made 18 appearances for the Blades during the first-half of the season, but Wilder admitted that he couldn’t guarantee the 20-year-old regular games following the turn of the year, with his permanent squad offering him plenty of options.

Discussing the defender’s departure, Wilder said: “We’ve got a fantastic relationship with Spurs. We wanted to be up front and honest with them, his parent club.

“Cam has done great and was a big part of what we’ve done at the start of the season.

“But with Ryan (Leonard) coming in, and with Bash (Chris Basham) being here, I couldn’t see him getting in regularly.”

It has been a busy start to the transfer window for the Blades, and along with Carter-Vickers’ departure, Wilder has moved to strengthen his numbers, with Ryan Leonard one of three permanent arrivals.

Lee Evans and Ricky Holmes have also been brought in, whilst James Wilson has arrived at Bramall Lane on a temporary basis from Manchester United.

Carter-Vickers’ form during the first-half of the season has helped the Blades to sixth, with Wilder’s side in serious promotion contention heading into late January.

The Blades travel to Carrow Road to face Norwich City on Saturday.

The Verdict

Wilder’s reasoning for letting Carter-Vickers return is extremely honest, and with the player set for a frustrating second-half of the season at Bramall Lane, the Blades have done the right thing.

Carter-Vickers gave Wilder a short-term fix, but after a busy midseason window, it is only fair to allow the youngsters an opportunity to find regular football elsewhere.
