Sheffield United continue to be the stand-out side in League One this season as they sit at the very top of the league with a seven-point gap on the chasing pack.

After a number of seasons of disappointment in League One, finally, it seems that the South Yorkshire side will be returning to the Championship.

One of the key reasons for Sheffield United's success this season has been the arrival of Chris Wilder who is replicating the success he had at Northampton Town.

The arrival of Chris Wilder saw the composition of an excellent squad and a change in tactics after a difficult start to the season. This led to a level of consistency and a string of high performances which Scunthorpe United and Fleetwood Town have been unable to keep up with.

Despite Sheffield United's success, the plethora of talent that Sheffield United has means that some players have drifted to the fringes of the squad who could still have a role to play.

FLW writer Elliott Wheat-Bowen looks at two Sheffield United fringe players who Chris Wilder is missing a trick not utilising.

Harry Chapman

Sheffield United's acquisition of Harry Chapman on loan from Middlesbrough was seen as a major coup for the England Under 20 international who has been tipped to play at the highest level of the game.

After an excellent start to the season, Chapman picked up a strange injury in training which saw the 19-year-old winger damage a membrane in his ankle which led to the bright talent being sidelined since December.

Prior to picking up the injury, the on-loan Middlesbrough winger had scored four times in eleven appearances proving himself to be an extremely exciting prospect and more than capable of performing at League One level.

The 19-year-old winger has drifted to the fringe of Sheffield United's squad because of the severe injury, however, it is expected that Chapman's return is imminent.

Once Chapman is fully fit, Chris Wilder would be missing a trick not utilising the winger who had been so effective up until the training ground injury.

James Wilson

After joining Sheffield United from Oldham Athletic, the former Welsh Under 21 international has struggled to cement his place in the team.

Wilson did begin the season as one Sheffield United's starting centre-halves as he featured in all of Sheffield United's first six matches, however, he has not featured since.

As Wilson has yet to play a competitive minute for Sheffield United since early September, the former Oldham centre-half appears to have fallen out of favour and down the pecking order.

The 29-year-old centre-half has fallen down the pecking order behind Jake Wright, Ethan Ebanks-Landell, Jack O'Connell and Chris Basham.

However, in the run-in, despite James Wilson very much being a fringe player, he could still prove to be a useful player who Chris Wilder could be missing a trick not utilising.
