League One outfit Sheffield United are looking every inch like promotion contenders this year with Chris Wilder’s men looking to end a six-year sabbatical from the Championship.

The Blades are currently third in the league and currently sit just three points behind leaders Scunthorpe United with everything still to play for in the race to secure Championship football for next season.

Boss Wilder has overseen a revival in fortunes at the South Yorkshire-based club having joined from Northampton Town in the summer. The 49-year-old replaced Nigel Adkins who departed Bramall Lane after a poor campaign last time around.

A return to the second-tier would ensure a place in Sheffield United folklore for Wilder and his staff and given his determined personality you wouldn’t back against the Blades fan being the one to put the club back on the map.

With January on the horizon, Football League World writer Lee Clarke looks at two transfers that Sheffield United cannot afford to miss out on.

Jack Hobbs

The central defender is way down the pecking order at Nottingham Forest and would probably be open to the idea of leaving the City Ground in search of more frequent football.

Hobbs has played his career mainly in the Championship and his arrival at Bramall Lane would add some quality experience to the Blades’ defensive unit.

Wilder could miss a trick if he doesn’t secure a deal for Hobbs this January and his arrival in South Yorkshire could give Sheffield United the edge in the race for promotion.

Emyr Huws

The 23-year-old has fallen out of favour at Cardiff City since the arrival of Neil Warnock as the club’s new boss and he could be on the way out of the club during the January transfer window.

The Welsh midfielder would be a quality addition to any club in League One and given their promotion credentials, he could see Sheffield United as a viable option for a loan move.

Huws will be looking to play more first-team football in order to avoid his career stagnating and the Blades would be wise to make a move this January.

Sheffield United fans, would you be happy to see these players down the Lane for the second half of the season? Who else should the club sign? Let us know in the comments below!!!
