It was one of the biggest surprises in English football in recent times.

Wigan Athletic, threatened with relegation to the Championship, came up against the giants of Manchester City in the FA Cup final, and everyone thought it could only go one way.

With players like Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, Joe Hart, Yaya Toure and David Silva, City were overwhelming favourites, but on 11 May 2013 the magic of the FA Cup sparkled on Wigan Athletic.

Locked at 0-0 as the clock ticked into stoppage time, the Latics won themselves a corner.

The rest is history.

Ben Watson won a famous glancing header which beat Joe Hart and won Wigan the cup.

This was the first time that Athletic had won the cup, but unfortunately the celebrations didn't last long as just days later they were relegated to the Championship after losing to Arsenal.

They got into the play-offs in their first season down there, but as we are seeing all too often nowadays, unless teams that are relegated can win promotion at the first time of asking, they'll end up stranded in the lower leagues.

They were relegated again the next season, although some good business by Gary Caldwell saw his side win League One at a canter in 2015-16.

Of the side that won on that incredible day in north London, just one player remains at the club, after then-manager Roberto Martinez was prised away by Everton and took a lot of his players with him.

Here, FLW's Ryan Evans has a look at where the FA Cup winning team of 2013 is now, and how they got there.

GK: Joel Robles - Everton

Wigan-Bradford-Warmup

Robles was just one of the Wigan players that followed manager Martinez to Everton the summer after the famous FA Cup win.

However since joining it hasn't gone the way the Spaniard would have wanted.

He has played just 43 times in the three years he's spent at Goodison, being number two to Tim Howard for the majority of that time and now he's behind Maarten Stekelenburg this season.

His only Premier League start this season was the 2-0 win over West Ham, although he did have an eleven-game spell in the first team last season.

Robles was instrumental in the Wigan victory at Wembley, thwarting Carlos Tevez twice and keeping a clean sheet.

RB: Emmerson Boyce - Free Agent

Emmerson-Boyce

The now 37-year-old stayed with the Latics until August 2015, moving to Blackpool which ended his nine year association with the club.

Boyce made almost 300 appearances for Wigan in that time, over 200 of them coming in the Premier League and even featured in the Europa League whilst at the DW Stadium.

He made another 69 league appearances for Wigan after lifting the cup, and another 26 for Blackpool in League One last season.

Whilst he's currently without a club, perhaps a lower league club in need of reinforcements may look Boyce's way in January.

CB: Paul Scharner - Retired

The 36-year-old was actually on loan from Hamburger SV when Wigan won the FA Cup, joining his former side in February for the remainder of the 2012-13 season.

He played in every single Premier League and FA Cup game that season, but retired the following September.

He made 174 appearances for the Latics during his time at the club, with the vast majority coming from his first stint there between 2006 and 2010.

CB: Antolin Alcaraz - Club Libertad

Alcaraz followed Robles and Martinez to Everton in the summer of 2013, after three years at the DW Stadium.

He went on to make 21 appearances for the Toffees before moving on to Las Palmas in Spain and then Club Libertad in his homeland of Paraguay earlier this year.

He has made 23 appearances for his national team, helping Paraguay reach the 2011 Copa America final.

The player was a crucial player in the Wigan FA Cup winning side, but hasn't been as successful since moving away from the club.

LB: Roger Espinoza - Sporting Kansas City

Wigan-Bradford-Warmup

The Honduran stayed at Wigan until December 2014, eventually leaving the club as he wasn't getting enough first team football.

He moved to former club Kansas for the beginning of the MLS season in March, and played the majority of that season in central midfield.

The versatile player suffered a foot injury that kept him out for the latter half of the 2015 season, but returned in the next to make 30 MLS appearances, upping his Kansas tally to 181 appearances to date.

Currently 30-years-old, Espinoza's footballing career is still going strong on the other side of the Atlantic.

Internationally, the midfielder has represented Honduras at the London Olympics as well as earning another 49 caps.

CM: James McCarthy - Everton

James McCarthyd

Whilst McCarthy didn't move to Merseyside alongside some of his colleagues until September, when it happened it was a big deal.

Believed to be worth £12 million, the Republic of Ireland international was at the time one of the Toffee's most expensive signings.

He was a pivotal part of a team that very nearly qualified for the Champions League that season, making 34 league appearances and only missing one game due to suspension.

Injury and form interrupted the next two seasons, allowing him to make only 28 and 29 appearances in the league respectively.

This season so far, he's started just two games after murmurings in the summer that he was unsettled due to lack of first team football, and has been played out of position just as often as being played in the correct one.

CM: James McArthur - Crystal Palace

James McArthur

Also playing in the Premier League, McArthur spent one season with Wigan after their relegation to the Championship, making 54 appearances.

However, both Leicester and Crystal Palace came calling the next summer, and eventually the Scot moved to South London in a £7 million deal.

He's gone on to make 75 appearances at Selhurst Park, and has been involved in six goals from ten appearances already this season.

He's one of their most important players, but has been unable to help Alan Pardew and his men overturn a woeful run of form that has seen them lose five games on the bounce, which has seen them drop to 16th place in the league.

CM: Jordi Gomez - Wigan Athletic

Whilst the 31-year-old may still be at the DW Stadium, it's been an interesting three years.

Like McArthur, Gomez stayed for the first Championship season, scoring seven and setting up seven more in his 31 league appearances.

However, he didn't get as much game time as he'd perhaps like, having to settle for substitute appearances and being left on the bench on many occasions.

He was snapped up by Sunderland on a free transfer and scored six in 39 at the Stadium of Light, before being loaned out to Blackburn Rovers in the January transfer window of this year.

After his Black Cats contract expired in the summer, he rejoined the Latics and has gone on to score twice in his nine games.

RW: Callum McManaman - West Brom

The winger was expected to be the next big thing at Wigan and he remained at the club until January 2015, making a total of 109 appearances during his time at the DW Stadium.

However Premier League clubs came calling as the Latics looked doomed for relegation, and McManaman chose West Bromwich Albion and Tony Pulis in a deal worth almost £5 million.

Things haven't worked out for him there as he has managed just 25 appearances so far and is without a goal.

This season, the 25-year-old has been limited to appearances with the club's under-23 team only, both in Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy.

ST: Arouna Kone - Everton

arouna-kone000d

Kone was another who jumped ship just after the FA Cup final win and relegation to the Championship, moving  alongside manager Martinez, McCarthy, Alcaraz & Robles to Merseyside.

He was never going to be first choice as Everton also had Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea on loan.

Kone managed a handful of substitute appearances before a knee injury ruled him out for the rest of the season in October.

He didn't actually make his comeback until the next December, a one-minute cameo in the victory over QPR, but got a little bit more game time in that season before becoming a regular fixture in Martinez's side in the first half of the 2015-16 season, scoring five goals in total.

Despite this, he's had just 43 minutes of playing time in this season under Ronald Koeman and may well be tempted to move away from Goodison in January.

LW: Shaun Maloney - Hull City

maloney33

Yet another current Premier League player from this FA Cup winning side, Maloney won man of the match in the FA Cup semi-final after scoring the opener against Millwall.

He decided to stick with the Latics, but missed the entirety of the club's Europa League campaign after going from September to April without playing, eventually scoring three league goals in his ten appearances.

In the next season he received more appearances, but only scored twice in twenty and eventually moved to the USA and Chicago Fire, before moving to Humberside in August 2015, where he currently remains.

SUB: Ben Watson - Watford

watson-v-cardiff-city-4x373-1382336_478x359

The only substitute Roberto Martinez made in the FA Cup final turned out to be an inspired one.

Watson came on after 81 minutes, and netted the winner in the first minute of stoppage time after beating Jack Rodwell at the near post to a Maloney corner.

The 31-year-old will go down in Wigan folklore for being the man to win them the FA Cup, and nothing that came after that day at Wembley has lived up to that moment for the player in footballing terms.

Watson stayed with the club until January 2015, moving to Premier League side Watford.

He made 35 appearances last season, but only has 42 league minutes to his name in this season.
