Wigan will spend another season in the third tier of English football having been relegated from the Championship in April, and new boss Paul Cook has it all to do if he is to guide the Latics to a promotion push next year.

Cook joined from League Two champions Portsmouth at the end of May, but is yet to make serious inroads into improving his squad, with just Cheyenne Dunkley joining from Oxford, and Terrell Thomas and Gavin Massey joining from lower levels.

Wigan have been slow in their recruitment this summer, and compare them to fellow relegated side Blackburn, the Latics are miles off competing with Rovers next season.

Tony Mowbray has made a number of quality signings at Ewood Park including Peter Whittingham and Bradley Dack, and Rovers look good for an immediate return to the Championship.

Cook has a lot to do if he is to prepare his team for the challenge ahead, and with just under two months remaining of the summer window, has plenty of time to rectify the situation.

However with pre-season underway and the season less than three weeks away, concerns will start to creep into the mind of the manager, who would have liked a more complete squad at this stage of the summer.

Cook does have quality in the squad he inherited, including Will Grigg who will undoubtedly thrive at this level once again.

However at this point in time, Wigan look like they would struggle for the top two, and even a place in the top six does not look guaranteed, with the division set to be extremely competitive this year.

Cook needs to start moving, otherwise the Latics’ spell in League One will be longer than they hope.
