Wigan Athletic attacker Jamal Lowe says he always believed his first goal for the club would come, after getting off the mark for the Latics in their 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Lowe joined Wigan from League One Portsmouth during the summer transfer window, for a reported £2.5million fee, but endured a difficult start to his time in the Championship, failing to score in his first 12 appearances in all competitions for Paul Cook's side.

That run came to an end at the weekend however, as Lowe fired home from close range after linking up with Gavin Massey 35 minutes into their clash with promotion chasers Forest.

That was enough to secure the three points for Wigan, and speaking to Wigan Today after the game about ending his individual drought, Lowe said: "It has been a long time in coming!

"I have been getting in some good positions, and that’s the main thing really. "Because when you’re not getting the chances, that’s a worry.

“I have just backed myself by keeping on getting in the right place, and the first one has gone in today.”

The win means that Wigan are now 18th in the Championship, with 13 of their 14 points this season coming at home.

The Latics now face back to back away games at Derby and Bristol City in the next week, and speaking about his sides vastly different records at home and on the road, Lowe continued: "We have always been strong at home.

“It is just about trying to take that into our away form because we are two completely different teams when you look at the results.

"We are working hard at bringing our home form into our away matches, and we have got two big ones coming up so hopefully we can do that.

“It is nice to have a game so quickly that we can try and take the momentum into."

The Verdict

This will be a big relief, not just for Lowe, but for Wigan as a whole.

Having invested a not-insignificant fee in Lowe over the summer, the Latics will have been expecting a tangible impact from Lowe this season.

That is something they certainly got against Forest on Sunday, and you imagine they will take a good deal of confidence from that, not least because of their opponent's strong position and ten-game unbeaten run in the buildup to their trip to The DW.

Now Lowe has got himself off the mark, both he and Wigan will surely be expecting him to continue to pose a threat to Championship defences throughout the course of the campaign, which could be crucial to keeping the club away from the relegation zone.
