Sky Bet Championship side Wigan Athletic have made an increased bid to try and keep hold of star-man Nick Powell beyond this season, according to reports from Wigan Today.

The 25-year-old has been a fantastic servant for the Latics since his move from Manchester United in 2016, scoring 15 goals in 45 games to fire Paul Cook's to League One promotion last term.

The attacking midfielder has continued to be an influential player for the Latics, scoring eight goals and producing six assists this season to help fire his side away from the relegation zone.

But the playmaker is facing an uncertain future at the DW Stadium, with the likes of Leeds United, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County all said to be interested in landing the midfielder on a free transfer in the summer.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, reports claim that Wigan have now increased terms in their original contract offer, in order to keep hold of their talisman beyond this season.

Wigan have survived the drop this season, with Paul Cook's men sitting 18th in the Sky Bet Championship table.

The Verdict

Wigan will be hoping that Powell will sign a new deal with the club, but it is looking unlikely for sure.

If the likes of Norwich and Leeds are interested, then turning down potential Premier League football would be a brave call for a player of Powell's quality.

However, to let a player of his ability leave on a free transfer would be criminal.
