Wigan Athletic have made an offer for Hibernian's Josh Campbell as new boss Shaun Maloney looks to strengthen his squad before the deadline.

The former player has inherited the club in a difficult position, with the side sitting bottom of the Championship and four points from safety.

Therefore, he will know the importance of bringing in players on deadline day and the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (22:20) has revealed that Maloney is looking to raid his old club Hibs for Campbell.

Even though the Edinburgh outfit have endured a mixed season so far, Campbell has impressed, scoring seven goals from midfield which includes a hat-trick in the 6-0 win over Aberdeen last time out.

The update doesn't state what sort of offer Wigan have lodged for the player, whilst it's unclear whether it will have implications on their proposed move for Campbell's teammate Kevin Nisbet, who was subject of a bid earlier today from the Latics as well.

Maloney knows all about Campbell as he regularly used the 22-year-old during his time in the Scottish capital before he was sacked.

The verdict

This would be a good signing for Wigan as Campbell is a player with a lot of quality and he has the physical attributes and energy to play the way the manager wants.

The obvious benefit here is that Maloney knows exactly what he's about, both in terms of his ability on the pitch and his character off it.

So, this would be a real coup if Wigan can get it over the line but the clock is ticking and it could be a tough one to finalise in time.
