With Reece James' loan expired and the 19-year-old expected to get his chance at Chelsea or elsewhere in the Premier League this season, Wigan must now turn their attentions to finding a replacement to their Player of the Season.
It seems that those plans are already being put into place, after Portuguese newspaper O Jogo claimed that the Championship side are interested in Portuguese right back Alex Pinto.
Pinto has made 55 appearances in all competitions during two seasons with Portuguese giants Benfica's B team, and although he has yet to make an appearance for the club's first team, it appears this will not be an easy deal for Wigan to pull off.
According to reports, Pinto is tied to Benfica by a contract until the summer of 2023, with a massive €60million release clause in his contract.
Wigan will therefore have to hope that Benfica will not want to enforce that clause if they are to bring Pinto to The DW Stadium.
The Verdict
Given the reported release clause in Pinto's contract, this will be some achievement if Wigan are able to negotiate a deal with Benfica, because that is a price only a top six Premier League side could think about paying in this country.
If they do pull it off, it will be fascinating to see how Pinto copes in the Championship, in comparison to the last rather successful young right back brought in from a big club to do that job.
