Wigan Athletic were keen on appointing Steve McClaren as their new manager, according to reliable football journalist Alan Nixon.

Former England manager Steve McClaren, who has been in charge of FC Twente, Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby County and Newcastle United since being sacked from the national job, was a top target for Wigan.

According to Nixon, McClaren "thought about it and said no" after Wigan were relegated to the third tier of English football again.

The Latics have now devised a three man shortlist from lower league managers.

Portsmouth manager Paul Cook is on that list after he guided Pompey to the League Two title.

Wigan are also looking at Luton Town's promising young manager Nathan Jones, who took the Hatters to a play-off semi-final, where they narrowly lost to Blackpool.

Wigan Athletic could also eye a reunion with Uwe Rosler, who has worked wonders at Fleetwood Town this year.
