Wigan Athletic are in talks with Alan Hutton as Paul Cook looks to add to his squad ahead of the new season.

The experienced Scotsman was released by Aston Villa as his deal came to an end following their promotion to the Premier League so is on the lookout for a new club.

And, Football Insider have revealed that a move to the Latics could be on the cards, with the report stating that the full-back is in 'advanced talks' with the Championship outfit.

The 34-year-old has proven himself to be a reliable performer in the second-tier over the years with Villa and played 33 games last season which helped the side to the play-offs.

However, his game time in the run-in was limited after he suffered a serious hamstring injury in February with Ahmed Elmohamady keeping the right-back spot after that.

Capable of playing in either full-back role, Wigan are short in that area and are desperate for reinforcements and are also said to have lodged a bid for Antonee Robinson.

The Verdict

This would be a smart move by Wigan because as mentioned they need new full-back options and Hutton is a good player.

To be able to bring him in on a free would be a great bit of business and his experience will help the group.

Hutton has shown that for Villa at this level and even though his age is a concern he will feel he still has a lot to offer for at least another season.

So, the challenge for the Latics is to seal the deal as soon as possible, to ensure the former Rangers man can link up with his new teammates for pre-season.
