Wigan are the latest Championship club to show an interest in Southampton striker Sam Gallagher, who looks set to leave the Saints this summer.
The 23-year-old barely featured under Ralph Hasenhüttl last season, making just four league appearances in what would have been a frustrating time for the player.
Therefore, a move always seemed likely and he has slipped further down the pecking order after the Premier League side completed the signing of Che Adams earlier today.
And, according to Sun reporter Alan Nixon, the Latics have made a late play for the target man.
“Wigan. Jumped into Sam Gallagher race. So there’s money to spend then.”
Nixon has previously stated that fellow Championship sides Blackburn and Brentford have shown an interest in the player.
Bringing in additional options in the final third has to be a priority for Paul Cook as he looks for his side to improve after they were involved in a relegation battle until a strong end to the previous season.
As well as that, they have lost top scorer Nick Powell who has moved on to Stoke City.
Gallagher has experience in the second-tier before, scoring 11 goals for Blackburn and six for Birmingham in two different loan spells.
This would be a very good signing for Wigan as they clearly need new attacking options this summer and Gallagher would add a lot to the side.
He can play with his back to goal and whilst he wasn’t prolific at Birmingham, he showed with Blackburn that he can score at this level.
The obvious issue for Wigan is whether they will be able to afford the fee and wages that the player demands but they must think he is a realistic target.
So, it’s now down to those involved to finalise this deal and it would be a real coup for Wigan.
