Wigan decide against deal for free agent defender

Wigan Athletic have reportedly decided against re-signing defender Reece Wabara due to concerns about his fitness, according to The Sun.

Reece Wabara left Wigan at the end of last season after signing a short term contract with the club in January.

The full back helped the Latics win promotion from League One last season but was released by the club at the end of the season despite impressing.

Wabara was linked with a summer move to Bristol City or Leeds United but a move never materialised.

Now it appears that Wigan will not be taking him back after Warren Joyce had reservations about his fitness.

The 24-year-old full back started his career at Manchester City but left in 2014 having only played 1 league game for the Premier League giants.

After leaving, the 24-year-old had spells with Doncaster and Barnsley before joining Wigan a year ago.

Wabara will need to work on his fitness to earn a contract elsewhere.
