Wigan Athletic won the League One title this season, scoring 89 goals, a league high and conceding just 29, by far the lowest in the league; an impressive feat for any side.

With Blackburn Rovers just two points behind them in the final standings, Wigan will be hoping to invest in players that they believe will be able to take them to the next level and perhaps take the Championship by surprise.

Paul Cook’s men have performed to the very highest level this season in the league, and in the cup competitions, including their famous 1-0 victory over Premier League winners Manchester City, showing they have what it takes to make in the big leagues.

The promise of high scoring Championship football will be an appealing factor to many, and we are bound to see some big names grace the turf at the DW Stadium next season.

Here are three deals that could see Wigan Athletic spring a surprise in the Championship next season.

With the season closing, it draws an end to the loan contract of goalkeeper Christian Walton. After making 31 appearances this season across all competitions for the Latics, Wigan fans will be hoping they can secure the Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper on a permanent deal over the summer.

The 22-year-old has now played for six clubs in his five year senior career, but Paul Cook should be looking to tie this goalie down to a long term contract after an impressive first season at Wigan.

Otis Khan has played 49 times for Yeovil this season in all competitions, scoring ten goals from the left side of midfield.

The 22-year-old spent ten years in the Manchester United youth system before joining Sheffield United’s set up in 2012, where he went on to make two first team appearances.

Khan signed a two year deal at Huish Park back in the summer of 2017, which leaves him one year short of a free agent. But, the youngster would be the bargain of the transfer window and could lead Wigan back to the Premier League.

McEneff has drawn the attention of a number of Championship clubs this season after his impressive campaign for Derry City in the League of Ireland Premier Division, the top tier of football in the Republic of Ireland.

The 22-year-old started his career at Tottenham Hotspur, but failed to make a first team appearance, and has since represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level.

Wigan would be taking a risk on McEneff, but with other teams circulating, it could be a good move for both parties.
