Wigan Athletic confirmed Paul Cook as their new manager on Wednesday, after he put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal.

Cook, leaves recently promoted Portsmouth for the North-West, where he will inherit a Latics squad that has just endured relegation heartache from the Sky Bet Championship to League One.

After a torrid season which saw Wigan, go through four managers, the Latics supporters will be hoping that Cook can bring stability to the club and guide them back to the Championship as quickly as possible.

Wigan, finished the season in 23rd position after only being able to collect 42 points all campaign, scoring just 40 goals and conceding 57.

This will be something that the new manager will need to change if he is to be successful next season.

Under Cook, Wigan can expect to be solid defensively, with Portsmouth only conceding 40 goals this season the best record in League Two, and also can be expected to score plenty of goals as Cooks Pompey, managing to find the back of the net on 79 occasions which was the second highest in the league.

After Cook managed to get the best out of his Portsmouth side this season, he should look to take Cristian Burgess and midfielder Gary Roberts with him to the DW Stadium.

Christian Burgess - The Pompey defender, appeared in all but two of the side's promotion winning campaign matches and proved to be a solid and consistent defender all season.

With Wigan looking to find a solid centre half pairing at the heart of their defence, Cook could look to return to Fratton Park to bring Burgess to the North, and start to build foundations in his new side.

Gary Roberts - The experienced midfielder could look to join up with Cook again at Wigan, having previously played under him at Accrington Stanley and then following him to Portsmouth.

Roberts, managed to find the back of the net on 10 occasions this season from midfield and could prove to be a real asset to the Wigan side taking some of the burden off Omar Bogle and Will Grigg who will be expected to score goals in League One next season.
