Last night was historic for Egyptian football after they secured their first World Cup place since 1990.

That means that Wigan Athletic will be represented at Russia 2018, with Sam Morsy part of the squad that qualified.

He took to Twitter to share his delight for what will undoubtedly be his career highlight.

Egypt were at home to Congo knowing that victory would send them to the World Cup, whereas any other result would mean they'd need something from their final game, away to Ghana.

Liverpool's Mo Salah gave the hosts a second half lead that looked to be enough. However, an 88th minute equaliser from Congo appeared to have ruined the night.

Yet, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Egypt were awarded a penalty, which Salah emphatically scored, sparking wild celebrations.

Whilst Morsy was an unused substitute last night, he will be hoping to add to his two caps so far on the biggest stage of them all.

The Verdict

Playing in a World Cup is the pinnacle for most players, so Sam Morsy will get the chance to fulfil a lifelong dream in around eight months time.

The way Egypt secured their qualification was remarkable and the celebrations demonstrated just how much this meant to everyone involved.

With his club side flying high in the league too, this could be a very memorable season for the Wigan midfielder.
