The Latics' first season back in the Championship certainly didn't go to plan, and Graham Barrow's men are heading back to League One as they look to re-group and mount a promotion push next season.

This campaign has been close to disastrous for Wigan.

They sacked boss, Gary Caldwell, in October with the side seemingly doing fine, and well on their way to beating the drop.

His replacement, Warren Joyce, didn't do much better though, and he too was sacked as the season drew to a close and Graham Barrow was placed in interim charge, but he couldn't pull off the impossible and preserve Wigan's Championship status.

This summer will be huge for Wigan.

Their parachute payments have now finished, so they will have to get their highest earners off the wage bill and replace them with players who know League One inside-out.

One player who Wigan could get to bolster their squad, is Chris Long.

The Burnley frontman doesn't seem to have much of a future at Turf Moor and he looks very likely to depart in the next couple of months.

Wigan's biggest problem this season has been scoring goals, so you would imagine a new striker will be on the shopping list of whoever Wigan's new manager is.

Long has spent this season on loan in League One, but struggled to find regular football, which Wigan could be able to offer him next season.

Long is blisteringly quick and his style of play is well suited to the third tier and if Wigan can give him regular football, he has shown in recent years, that he knows where the net is.
